Legged robots

A robot that walks on articulated legs but is not shaped like a person — robot dogs, two-legged research platforms and hexapods.

  • walking robot
  • legged robot

What it is

A legged robot moves by placing feet, not rolling wheels. Legs cross stairs, rubble, gaps and loose ground that stop a wheeled robot. The trade is everything else: more joints, more energy per metre travelled, more software to stay upright, and a higher price than a wheeled base.

Also called a walking robot or robot dog. Here the test is articulated legs on a body that is not humanoid in form, and the number of legs decides the child. Wheels on the feet and an add-on arm do not change the branch; they are the wheel_feet and has_arm attributes.

The types

  • Quadruped — four legs: the stable, commercial shape, from desktop kits to inspection dogs such as Spot.
  • Biped — two legs, no humanoid torso: a balance-research platform such as the LimX TRON 1.
  • Multi-legged — six or more legs: insect-like walkers, statically stable on any three feet.

What to compare

Attribute Why it matters In this catalogue
mass Kits fit in a bag; industrial dogs need two people or a ramp 0.45 kg (MangDang Mini Pupper 2) – 60 kg (Unitree B2)
payload Sensors, an arm or extra batteries on the back 0.2 kg (MangDang Mini Pupper 2) – 40 kg (Unitree B2)
battery_runtime Minutes of walking for kits, a shift's worth for industrial models 60 min (Petoi Bittle X) – 240 min (Unitree B2)
max_speed Research platforms chase speed; inspection robots walk steadily (the Unitree B2 figure is a lab maximum) 1.3 m/s (ANYbotics ANYmal) – 6 m/s (Unitree B2)
wheel_feet Powered wheels on the feet trade stairs for speed on flat ground yes: LimX TRON 1, Unitree Go2-W
has_arm Door-opening and valve-turning need one yes: Boston Dynamics Spot, LimX TRON 1, Luwu Dynamics XGO-lite3, Luwu Dynamics XGO-mini2S, Petoi Bittle X, Unitree Go2
