What it is
A multi-legged robot has six or more articulated legs. With that many feet it keeps at least three planted at every moment, so it is statically stable: stop it mid-stride and it simply stands there. That is the trade it makes against quadrupeds and bipeds. It needs far less control sophistication and tolerates a lost leg, but it carries more motors, moves slowly, and is less energy-efficient than wheels or four legs. The low, wide shape also fits cluttered spaces that taller walkers cannot enter.
People call it a hexapod robot, six-legged robot, insect robot or spider robot. In this taxonomy it sits under Legged robot beside quadrupeds and bipeds; the test is six or more articulated legs. Wheels on the feet or an add-on arm do not change that. The word hexapod is also used for six-legged Stewart motion platforms, which are parallel arms, not walkers.
What they are used for
- Hobby and education kits — servo-driven hexapods are a classic build for learning gait generation, inverse kinematics and microcontroller programming.
- Gait and terrain research — statically stable walkers for studying leg coordination, bio-inspired locomotion and recovery from leg loss.
- Confined-space inspection — low, wide walkers for pipes, crawl spaces and collapsed structures, where a quadruped is too tall and a tracked robot too long.
What to compare

|---|---|---|
mass |
Mostly desktop-size; larger walkers are rare | not yet in the catalogue |
dof_total |
Three joints per leg is typical, so counts climb fast | not yet in the catalogue |
max_speed |
Slow by nature; compare against tracked robots, not quadrupeds | not yet in the catalogue |
payload |
Low; the legs carry the body and little else | not yet in the catalogue |
battery_runtime |
Many motors working at once; expect short sessions | not yet in the catalogue |
has_arm |
A gripper or small arm on the body stays in the category | no entries yet |

In the catalogue
No products yet — this is where hobby hexapod kits, research hexapods and eight-legged inspection walkers would go.
Edge cases
- Hexapod motion platforms (Stewart platforms): a parallel arm, not a legged robot.
- Four-legged robots: quadrupeds, even when sold as insect or spider robots.
- Wheels on the feet: still multi-legged;
wheel_feet: true. - Snake and crawler robots with no legs: not legged robots; no branch holds them yet; a branch will be added when a purchasable one exists.
