What it is

A fixed-base humanoid is the upper half of a humanoid with no way to move itself: a torso, two arms and a head on a fixed mount. It gives up mobility and in return drops the hardest, most expensive and most dangerous parts of the design. Nothing to balance, no battery to drain, no fall to recover from, and the arms can be heavier because the mount carries them. For a lab studying hands, bimanual manipulation or human-robot interaction, that is often enough.

Also called a torso humanoid, half humanoid or humanoid upper body. In this taxonomy it sits under Humanoid beside bipedal and wheeled-base humanoids; the test is the humanoid torso, arms and head with no locomotion system. Two arms on a stand without a head are an arm with arm_count: 2; an armless desktop companion is a Stationary robot.

What they are used for

  • Bimanual manipulation research — two coordinated arms and hands on a bench, collecting demonstrations and testing learned policies.
  • Human-robot interaction studies — a face, head and gestures at table height for social research.
  • Assembly and kitting cells — a two-armed, human-shaped worker at a fixed station beside people.
  • Exhibitions and reception desks — an upper body that talks and gestures from behind a counter.

payload Per arm; often higher than a walking humanoid of the same size not yet in the catalogue

In the catalogue

No products yet — this is where humanoid upper-body research platforms and dual-arm torsos with heads sold without a base would go.

Edge cases

  • A humanoid torso sold without its wheeled base: here; the base is a separate entry linked by compatible_with.
  • Two cobot arms on one stand, no head: an arm with arm_count: 2.
  • An armless desktop or social robot: a Stationary robot.
  • A torso on a cart you push: still fixed-base; no locomotion of its own.
